Title: "I Told You So"
Singer: Carrie Underwood
Writer(s): Randy Travis
Album: Carnival Ride
Don't be fooled - there is an art to covering a song. Especially when that song is sung by a true genre giant and happened to go to #1. These songs are judged harder and longer by a broader crowd - for what they bring, what they left behind, and, of course, how it measures to the original.
So what was Carrie Underwood thinking when she decided to cover Randy Travis' #1 hit "I Told You So?" Not only was this one of the biggest songs in 1989, it's a song that many said shouldn't be touched. But thank God Carrie did. It's no wonder why Travis approves of Underwood's take on his tune.
Never before has Carrie shown so much artistic maturity in her vocal delivery. You can hear the regret, the resentment, the embarrassment, the love in her voice as she skillfully masters through this gem of a song. Underwood, instead of mixing up the arrangement, stays true to Travis' own take of the song. Sure, the musical arrangement is a bit different - no, she didn't pop it up. In fact, this may be her most country cut yet - but her vocal delivery is almost a karaoke of Travis'. But that's ok: very few of Carrie's fans, and probably very few that listen to radio, have heard the original version, so there won't be the overlay there. Listen closely, too, because another fantastic vocalist is doing background vocals - Vince Gill.
With this single release, Underwood has proven that she can cover all the bases of the country music genre. She also leaves no doubt that she is a superb vocalist that can master the highs and lows of vocal delivery. You will feel the hurt from "I Told You So." And for Underwood, she can finally say to her naysayers, "I told you so!"
