Your Country

All Country... All You!

I can't believe what I'm hearing. Kristy Lee Cook, who was dropped from her label Arista Nashville a few weeks ago, is alleging wrongdoing on account of the label. She says that she was ignored in favor of Carrie Underwood. Here's the direct quote from the Grants Pass Daily Courier in Oregon:

"(Arista) released me again. It's because I was on the same label as Carrie Underwood. We're kind of glad that we got released because we weren't getting the attention we need. They promoted it a little bit. They spent so much more money on Carrie."

You're joking, right? Tell me - in a business that is all about connections, why on Earth would you demean your former label, one that happens to be a mega-giant in the music business? Why, why, why?! Dolly Parton probably doesn't feel like she was treated right by the big labels, but you don't hear her crying or whining.

Let me tell you the truth, Kristy. This is the second time you've been dropped, from the same label I might add. What does that mean? Your single barely cracked the top 30 at country radio. CMT and GAC shunned your video. Understand that (in most cases) radio and television does not ignore good music. You were on American Idol for God's sake, the very machine that created Carrie Underwood, and you can't sell 50,000 copies of your album?

That's not the label's fault, sweet heart. You obviously are not as good as you think you are. Perhaps some self-blame is in order. You picked terrible songs and a vanilla delivery. There was nothing artistic or creative or different on your album. It was Shania Twain meets Sara Evans rehashed. We've been there and done that.

Cook goes on to say that she has a song Arista "didn't want me to put on the album that's going to be a hit." Great. So you really do want to be a one-hit wonder. Look, had Shania put out "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" and then "15 Minutes of Shame," she would have returned to Canada and we'd never have heard the name Shania again.

You, as an artist, have to bring something to the table. And right now, the table is full. Did Arista spend too much time with their #1 artist? Perhaps. But get used to it. It happens. The label wants to make money, too. And we already have a moderately successful mainstream blonde country singer - Kellie Pickler. She's also from Idol, also on Sony's roster, and she's doing just fine.

Next in line please. Oh, and good luck with your Universal talks. They have other artists to focus on right now.
